Breakfast in Lebanon

The artist explores her identity through her mother. Moving to Canada when she was younger made her neglect her Lebanese identity as she was trying to assimilate. With a few Middle Eastern family and friends in her childhood, her mother was her only source of knowledge of Lebanese tradition that she was exposed to, through storytelling, cultural practices, and cooking.

The artists intention is to show the connection she has with Lebanon through her mother. Throughout the video, she shows herself interacting with her mother as she helps her prepare Manakeesh. This meal resonates with Reem as she would always eat it for breakfast when she went to Lebanon while sitting on her grandmother’s balcony.
